Idea
The interest in the relationship between real and
virtual space and the interaction between both where the foundation
of My84.
My84 was an installation in
a lounge bar/house club in Australia.
The idea was to connect the club space with the virtual space
of the internet on several levels.
The first level was that a real
time VJ application was creating visuals according to the
frequencies of the music played in the club, those visuals
where displayed on large plasma displays and were also streamed
live together with the music played from the DJ to users on
the club website. Therefore the virtual site visitors where
not only listening to the same music then the club visitors
but they would also have the same visual experience.
The Second level would be that
internet users could make themselves visible to the club visitors
through logging into the sites messenger system, which then
would incorporate there name into the visuals of the VJ application.
This would act like an Instant Messenger in shared public
space, since club visitors, which would recognize the name
of a site visitor, are able to chat to them on terminals provided
in the club.
The Third level is that site
visitors could not only display there names but could also
send messages to the visuals, which would created the most
direct link between virtual site visitors and real club visitors.
Technical Realization
The VJ application was created in Macromedia Director
together with the asFFT xtra.
The audio was streamed to the Internet user with Macromedia
Flash Communication Server.
The Visuals where made visible to the internet users by including
a shockwave version of the VJ application on the website which
was creating the visuals on the users machine, therefore video
streaming wasn't necessary and the service could be provided
through a dial-up connection.
The Messenger System was made with Macromedia Flash using
XML since this can talk either to another Flash application
or to the Director VJ application through it's XML socket.
The Visuals Where Provided on large screen Fuji tsu Plasma Displays.
